Polyaspartic vs Epoxy: What’s the Difference?
Both terms get used interchangeably in ads and contractor pitches, but they describe chemically different materials with different strengths. Here is how Johnny at Gold Coast Resin thinks about which one belongs on a Gilroy floor.
The coating industry doesn’t make this easy on consumers. “Epoxy floor” and “polyaspartic floor” both get marketed as premium floor coating systems. Both are two-part systems mixed on site. Both require professional-grade surface preparation. And in many installed systems, both are present at the same time, on the same floor, doing different jobs.
The confusion is understandable. Here is what actually separates them.
The Chemistry Difference
Epoxy is an aromatic compound. Polyaspartic is an aliphatic compound. That distinction matters for one specific reason: how each reacts to ultraviolet light.
Aromatic epoxy undergoes a photochemical reaction when exposed to UV radiation. The surface yellows, chalks, and eventually loses gloss. This is not a defect in a specific brand or formulation. It’s a property of the aromatic chemistry. Standard epoxy floors installed in garages with open-door sun exposure in Gilroy will yellow over time. It’s not if. It’s when.
Polyaspartic’s aliphatic chemistry doesn’t have that reaction. It holds its color and gloss under direct UV exposure. That’s the primary reason polyaspartic gets used as the topcoat on most professional floor systems, including systems that use epoxy as the base coat.
Cure Time
Standard epoxy needs 24 to 72 hours of cure time between coats and before the floor is ready for traffic, depending on temperature and formulation. Polyaspartic can be formulated to cure in two to four hours, which is why single-day floor installations are possible with polyaspartic systems.
The tradeoff: faster cure means less working time for the installer. A polyaspartic coat that cures in two hours gives the installer two hours to apply it correctly and get off the floor before it sets. Epoxy’s longer open time allows techniques like metallic pigment manipulation that aren’t possible with fast-curing polyaspartic. That’s why metallic epoxy systems use epoxy rather than polyaspartic for the decorative layer, even though polyaspartic is used for the topcoat.
Which One Is Stronger?
This question doesn’t have a clean answer because strength depends on which property you’re measuring. Polyaspartic generally has better UV resistance and a harder final surface. Epoxy generally has a longer working time that allows thicker build coats and certain installation techniques. Neither is categorically better.
The honest answer: Most professional floor systems use both. Epoxy as the base for adhesion and build thickness. Polyaspartic as the topcoat for UV stability, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. Trying to choose between them as competing products misunderstands how they’re actually used.
What About Cost?
Polyaspartic generally costs more than epoxy as a raw material. But the installed cost comparison depends on the full system, not just the topcoat. A professionally installed epoxy base with polyaspartic topcoat is priced as a complete system. A “cheaper” epoxy-only floor without a UV-stable topcoat will yellow and degrade faster, meaning the total cost over five years is higher than the system that cost more upfront.
On a Gilroy garage floor with regular sun exposure, cutting the topcoat to save money is a decision that shows up in year two or three when the floor starts looking flat and chalky. The coating is still technically protecting the concrete. It just doesn’t look like it did when it was installed.

The cases where a metallic epoxy base goes on without a fast-cure topcoat are rare, because the UV degradation risk is real in any California climate.
