Pouring Resin in 105-Degree Valley Heat

Fresno in July is the hardest weather we pour in. A slab sitting in a west-facing garage off Shaw Avenue can read 115 degrees at three in the afternoon, and resin does not care what the thermostat in the house says. It reacts to the temperature of the concrete under it. Hot slab means the material kicks fast, and fast is the enemy of a good metallic pattern. You lose the window where the pigment still wants to move.

So we move the schedule instead of fighting the chemistry. Summer pours in Fresno start at first light, before the slab has loaded up any heat from the day. Johnny checks the concrete with an infrared thermometer and will not open a kit until the number is where it belongs. Batches get mixed small so nothing sits warm in a bucket. On the biggest floors we bring a second set of hands specifically so the leading edge never has a chance to set before the next pass meets it. That is how a 1,200 square foot garage near Woodward Park comes out looking like one continuous piece instead of three sections stitched together.

Decades of diesel and hydraulic oil soak into unsealed concrete, and oil-contaminated slab will reject a coating no matter how well you grind it. Johnny checks with a water drop first. If the water beads instead of soaking in, the slab is contaminated and needs degreasing and a deeper cut before anything else happens. Sometimes that means grinding past the affected layer entirely. It is more labor up front and it is the only version of the job that lasts.
