What Happens to Your Slab Before Any Color Goes Down

Most shop floors we walk into are old vinyl tile, sheet goods, or a slab that has been painted twice and is already flaking at the chair bases. All of it comes off. We diamond grind down past the adhesive and past the weak top layer of the slab until we hit a CSP 2 to CSP 3 profile, which is the texture the resin needs to actually key into the concrete instead of sitting on top of it like a sticker. That grinding step is the whole job. A pretty pour over a slick slab peels, and every peeling floor Johnny has been called in to fix started with somebody skipping the grinder.

Moisture testing comes next, and it matters more in a barbershop than people expect. Shops get built into old retail bays and strip units where the slab was poured decades ago with no vapor barrier under it. If that slab is pushing moisture, the coating blisters from underneath months after you have paid for it. Johnny runs a calcium chloride or RH probe test before he commits to a system, and if the numbers come back high he puts down a moisture-mitigating primer first. That is a conversation he has with you up front, not a surprise line on the invoice.

Pour Day at a Working Shop

Johnny sequences barbershop pours around your book. Chairs, mirrors, and the back bar get pulled or masked, the shop gets sealed off with plastic and negative air so grinding dust does not end up in your clipper motors, and the base coat goes down in one continuous pull so there is no cold joint sitting in the middle of your floor. On a metallic, the pigment is worked while it is still open, chopped and moved with a squeegee and a torch until the pattern reads the way you want it under the shop lights. That window is short. Once it starts to set, whatever is in the floor is in the floor forever, which is exactly why this part is not handed to a helper.

The polyaspartic topcoat goes on last. It cures fast, holds its gloss under UV instead of ambering the way a cheap epoxy topcoat does in a front window, and it is the layer taking the barbicide, the clipper oil, and the color drips. Light foot traffic is usually fine the next morning, chairs go back within two to three days depending on shop temperature.
