Flake Epoxy: Full Broadcast vs Partial Broadcast
Vinyl chip floors aren’t all the same. The density of the flake broadcast affects the finished appearance, texture, and how the floor ages under traffic. Here is how to think about which approach belongs on your floor.
Vinyl chip epoxy floors go by several names: flake floors, chip floors, broadcast floors. What they all have in common is decorative vinyl chips scattered across a wet epoxy base coat before a polyaspartic topcoat seals everything in. What varies significantly is how densely those chips are scattered, and that density is where full broadcast and partial broadcast differ.
Partial Broadcast
A partial broadcast floor uses a controlled application of vinyl chips at a density that leaves epoxy visible between the chips. Depending on the coverage rate, you might see chips covering 30% to 70% of the floor surface, with the colored epoxy base coat showing through between them.
The look is closer to a terrazzo or granite aggregate, with visible color from both the chips and the base coat working together. The appearance is somewhat softer and more varied than a full broadcast floor because the eye reads both the chip color and the base coat color simultaneously.
Partial broadcast is a valid approach for spaces where a more decorative or refined look is the goal. It’s also slightly less forgiving of concrete surface variations because areas where the base coat is visible are subject to more scrutiny than a densely chipped surface where the chips hide minor variations.
Full Broadcast
A full broadcast floor is exactly what the name says. Vinyl chips are scattered at full coverage until the wet epoxy base coat beneath is completely hidden. The installer keeps throwing chips until the surface reads as 100% chip, no base coat visible. The excess chips that don’t embed get scraped off after cure, revealing a tightly packed chip surface.
After scraping, the chips are knocked level, vacuumed clean, and the polyaspartic topcoat seals them in. The finished surface reads as a continuous chip field with no epoxy color visible. The visual character of the floor is entirely determined by the chip blend selected.
Full broadcast is the more durable configuration. The dense chip layer under the topcoat adds texture and slip resistance, hides surface blemishes in the concrete much more effectively than partial broadcast, and creates a thicker aggregate layer that contributes to the overall system build. The Texture Difference
Full broadcast floors have a naturally textured surface from the chip layer. The texture provides grip underfoot and is part of why flake floors are so practical in garage environments where water, oil, and grit get tracked in. The polyaspartic topcoat smooths the surface somewhat but the chip texture comes through.
Partial broadcast floors are slightly smoother because large areas of the surface are the topcoat sitting on smooth epoxy rather than a chip layer. This is sometimes preferred in commercial spaces where wheeled equipment needs to move smoothly across the floor, or in residential spaces where a cleaner, more refined look is the priority.
Hiding Imperfections
Full broadcast wins definitively on concealing concrete imperfections. Staining, minor surface spalling, repaired cracks, and discoloration all disappear under a dense chip layer. The topcoat blends the surface into a uniform appearance across the full floor.
Partial broadcast is less forgiving. Any variation in the base coat color, uneven application, or concrete discoloration that shows through the chip density will be visible in the finished floor. On new, clean concrete this is rarely an issue. On older garage slabs with years of staining, partial broadcast requires careful base coat color selection and sometimes primer to minimize the visibility of what’s underneath.
Color Options
Vinyl chips are available in hundreds of color blend combinations. Most professional installers carry standard blends and can custom-order specific combinations. The chip blend is specified by the ratio of colors in the mix. A blend might be 40% white, 30% gray, 20% black, and 10% tan, which produces a salt-and-pepper granite look. A different blend with earth tones produces a completely different character.
For full broadcast floors, the chip blend is the entire visual identity of the floor. Base coat color doesn’t show. For partial broadcast, the base coat color matters as much as the chip blend because both read simultaneously in the finished result.
Which One Is Right?
For most residential garage floors in the South Bay and Central Valley, including Gilroy, full broadcast is the better choice. It’s more durable, hides concrete imperfections better, provides more texture and grip, and produces a cleaner, more uniform result on slabs that have years of vehicle use behind them.
Partial broadcast is the right call when the concrete is in excellent condition, when a more refined or decorative look is the priority, or when the space will see wheeled equipment that benefits from a smoother surface texture.
